Gift to Millionaires
“Taxing haircuts and other goods and services to give tax breaks to millionaires will drive up costs on consumers and hurts North Carolina businesses.” – YDNC National Committeewoman Akilah Ensley
“With 1.7 million North Carolinians in poverty struggling to make ends meet, how would a 225% grocery tax increase be to their benefit? As a civilized society do we not have a moral responsibility to do better for these families?”
-YDNC National Committeeman Justin Karr Conley
This will hurt North Carolina for generations.
The working class tax hike will be devastating for college students and recent graduates.
Young Americans are struggling with high unemployment rates and unprecedented student loan debt. Under the ‘Tax Fairness Act,’ everyday necessities will cost more for students and young graduates. Instead of getting student loan relief, lower tuition rates, better teachers, or greater access to education, the only lesson students are learning is that Republican government doesn’t work for them.
A parent of three earning average income will pay $1,089 more over 3 years.
Her extra expenses will pay for a bachelor making $300,000 to pocket an additional $12,694 over the same time.
Republicans in the General Assembly are attacking hardworking families across our state by proposing a working class tax hike. For young families of four, groceries alone will cost hundreds of dollars more each year. A tax policy that forces people to struggle for their everyday needs isn’t going to promote job growth or homeownership.
A tax hike that hurts seniors.
Elderly North Carolinians who live on a fixed income will pay higher rates for necessary services.
The generations who came before us – paved the way for our opportunities, helped us in our time of need, inspired us to achieve our goals and loved us even when we couldn’t – will be exploited by the working class tax hike. Our grandmothers shouldn’t have to decide whether they’re going to get a haircut or buy a gallon of milk. They deserve better than that. North Carolina deserves better than that.
We didn’t vote for this!
Republicans across this state campaigned on job creation and fixing a broken system.
But they’ve slashed essential programs and positions in our school system, embarrassed us nationwide by filing unconstitutional legislation, and are now trying to play catch up at the expense of the citizens who make this state great. The working class tax hike proves that the Republican leadership in the General Assembly isn’t concerned with what North Carolina needs, wants, or believes in.
